Good Health Guide - Injuries to the skin
The skin

The skin is a veritable wonder of versatility. It is our largest organ, it encapsulates us, protects us and also acts as an interface to the world outside. Aided by millions of oval corpuscles, it registers warmth, heat and all kinds of touches – from a breath of wind to a raindrop or a gentle caress. With a surface area that measures two square metres, it secretes toxins and sebum and absorbs substances from outside. It breathes, helps to regulate our circulation, ensures that our body warmth remains constant even at extreme outdoor temperatures – not to mention being the mirror of our souls. Each skin cell has a life span of only 28 days. During this time, the cell moves to the surface of the skin, where it eventually dies and flakes off. The major advantage of the cells’ short life span is that damaged skin can regenerate itself very quickly.
