Catkins, Lamb’s Tails – and Childhood Allergies

When the weather turns nice, children want to be out in the fresh air. There they are free to run and jump and climb trees. But after just a short time, your child is back, rubbing her reddened eyes and complaining of itching. A rapid response is needed to soothe those itchy, streaming eyes, and here the remedy of choice is WALA Euphrasia Augentropfen1. The eyebright contained in these eye drops has a soothing, harmonising action on the area around the eyes. For relief from allergic conjunctivitis, choose WALA Echinacea Quarz comp. Augentropfen2. The echinacea (Echinacea pallida) in the drops strengthens the immune system, while silver nitrate (Argentum nitricum) reduces inflammation. Rose petal oil soothes and relieves. And our nasal balm WALA Nasenbalsam für Kinder3 contains plant extracts of blackthorn and barberry to help the nose cope with irritation and regulate any watery discharge (rhinitis).

Preventing allergies
Many factors may combine to cause an allergy. A genetic predisposition, weakened immune system and frequent contact with foreign substances can all play a significant role. There are indications that the allergic child may not be able to maintain adequate boundaries between himself and his environment. The skin and mucous membrane barrier of little noses and eyes becomes weak and reacts quickly to contact with allergens by swelling and itching.

Daily routines which include sufficient rest periods help children to centre themselves. Child experts know that rhythm in a child’s daily life has a strengthening and stabilising influence on their health. It is now also widely recognised that too much media consumption (television and computers) can have a debilitating effect on health stability, especially with allergies. In nature, stability and boundary-forming are symbolised by the oak (Quercus). Which is why WALA chose oak bark to be the main ingredient of WALA Calcium Quercus Globuli velati4. A remedy that, in the allergy season, functions as a baseline therapy to strengthen and support children’s ability to form boundaries.

Tip for allergic parents
Do you suffer from allergies too? Then the following tip is meant for you: during the usually allergy-free periods of autumn and winter, take a course of treatment with bitter plant preparations. This improves blood flow in the intestinal tract, which in turn gives a lift to the immune system and prepares it to face the allergy season. Bitter Elixier5, which contains medicinal plants such as yellow gentian and wormwood, among other ingredients, is ideally suited for this purpose.
