Exhibition tip: Experiment FARBE - 200 Jahre Goethes Farbenlehre [Experiment COLOUR – 200 Years of Goethe’s Theory of Colours]

From 12 June to 31 August 2010 the Goetheanum in Dornach is showing a large special exhibition entitled “Experiment FARBE – 200 Jahre Goethes Farbenlehre” [Experiment COLOUR – 200 Years of Goethe’s Theory of Colours]. With interactive experiments, theoretical background information and outstanding artistic installations, this exhibition introduces the visitor to the diverse aspects of colour phenomena through play and science.

What is there to see?

  • An interactive section with many experiments and test setups to try out, marvel at and experience.
  • Exhibits about the blue of the sky and the red of dawn, rainbows and prisms, as well as a stage for demonstrations ranging from coloured shadows to spectral projections on cinema-sized screens.
  • A special section on the relationship between Goethe and Newton with experiments by Goethe and Newton and from the field of modern optics.
  • A section with pictures and installations by various artists on the topic of how colours can be presented experimentally and with originality, yesterday and today, in order to refresh the way we experience colour.

What is the purpose of this exhibition?

The exhibition is intended to renew the discussion about COLOUR against the background of Goethe’s ideas. What can we learn today from this perspective? How can we regain a lively appreciation of the many-facetted manifestations of colour? In his Theory of Colours Goethe presented many ideas, some of which have been taken up in various forms and some of which have been rejected over the past 200 years. This exhibition aims to be more than just a reiteration and recapitulation of Goethe’s Theory of Colours. Its objective is to look at these approaches afresh from today's perspective and find diverse ways of implementing them in practice.

Why pick colour as a theme?

We are surrounded by colours, by impressions from nature, advertising and television, by objects and works of art, by experiences of love and tragedy. All these things are sources of experiences which are colourful.

Why is the sunset red and not green, why is the sky blue and not orange? Self-evident truths? No: abilities and experiences we have, which can be channelled into development of a conscious handling of the omnipresence of colour.
