Three Questions for Walter Janetschek

Together with his fellow workers, Walter Janetschek prepares essences, oily extracts and syrups for WALA Medicines, Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and our new product line, Dr.Hauschka Med. In our interview you can find out what he is working on currently.

What exactly is your job at WALA?

In our section we process fresh plants to make mainly essences, but also syrups, tonics and elixirs. The elixirs and tonics go to the filling department for use as so-called bulk products. We make essences and syrups as intermediates for medicines and skin care products. In addition to the actual production, I am responsible for planning and coordinating fresh plant deliveries. I am also responsible for projects abroad. Recently I was in South Africa to oversee production of a pressed juice for our skin care products.

What are you working on currently?

In the winter we filter the essences that we manufactured during the months when fresh plants were available (April to September). At present we are working on a sage essence for skin care products.

What do you see when you look around your workplace?

The roof in this part of the building is partly made of glass and it’s great to be able to glance up at the sky once in a while. To my left I can see a little bit of the garden and the gardeners’ shed, and on the other side I can see the plant laboratory. In the middle of the room is our big plant cutting machine. Three doors lead to the light exposure rooms. There we rhythmise the mixtures mornings and evenings. At present the rooms contain two vessels full of valerian syrup.
