Drawing, stabbing pains in the neck and shoulder area or in the lower back, often accompanied by headaches stemming from the neck. Many people experience these symptoms after a long day working at the computer or during times of acute mental stress.
In Western industrialised society, back pains are one of the most common complaints of all. Almost everyone suffers from them at some stage of their lives. This may be due to incorrect, strained posture, which itself is often a direct result of working at the computer. As well as this, there is generally a lack of sufficient movement which, among other things, would help to strengthen the back muscles. A vicious circle then ensues, whereby worsening posture increases the pain, forcing the body into less painful – and ultimately less healthy – positions.
Stress and emotional strain also manifest themselves frequently in back problems. Figurative expressions such as “to shoulder a burden” or “to break someone’s back” convey this situation very vividly.
