Good Health Guide - Injuries to the skin
Pressure sores (decubitus)

Symptoms

  • Depending on the degree of severity, ranges from slight reddening to profound damage to skin and tissues
Potential causes
  • Being bedridden, particularly in places where the skin is in direct contact with the bone (heel, coccyx, shoulder blades, etc.)
  • Excessively tight plaster casts
What you can do yourself

Not even first-degree pressure sores should be treated at home, but rather examined by a doctor.

It is important to prevent pressure sores from the very beginning. Because of this, patients should be ‘turned’ every two hours, alternately lying on their back and sides. Specialist retailers sell extra-soft mattresses and supports that are designed to take the pressure of the areas in question.
